The FLIR MR176 is a professional moisture meter built around a different workflow from conventional pin or pinless meters. Instead of relying only on point measurements, it includes an 80 × 60 thermal imaging sensor that visually guides the user toward areas where moisture may be affecting temperature patterns.
Once a suspicious location is identified, the same instrument can be used in pinless mode or with the included external pin probe to investigate moisture more directly. This combination makes the MR176 particularly useful for building inspection, water-damage restoration and mold-remediation work where finding the right place to measure is often the first challenge.
FLIR’s Infrared Guided Measurement technology uses a built-in Lepton thermal imaging sensor to display temperature differences across the inspected surface. An integrated laser and crosshair help identify the physical location corresponding to the area shown on the thermal image.
Thermal imaging does not measure moisture directly. Instead, it helps reveal temperature patterns that can be associated with evaporation, water intrusion, missing insulation or other building-envelope conditions. The moisture sensor is then used to investigate the area more closely.
The integrated pinless sensor provides a 0–100 relative moisture scale and can detect to a maximum depth of approximately 3/4 inch. This makes it useful for quick non-invasive checks without damaging the surface.
For direct measurements, the MR176 includes an external pin probe. Pin mode provides moisture-content readings from 7% to 30% with specified accuracy, while higher readings up to 100% are treated as reference values. Nine material groups help adapt pin measurements to different materials.
A field-replaceable temperature and relative-humidity sensor adds environmental data to the moisture investigation. The MR176 can measure air temperature and calculate dew point, providing additional context when evaluating condensation risk and drying conditions.
Because the sensor is replaceable, it can be serviced separately instead of requiring the entire instrument to be replaced when the environmental sensor reaches the end of its useful service life.
In a water-damage investigation, the MR176 can first be used to scan walls, ceilings or floors for temperature anomalies. The inspector can then move directly to the suspicious location and use pinless or pin measurements depending on the material and whether small probe holes are acceptable.
This workflow can reduce the amount of random probing required when the affected area is not obvious. It is also useful during follow-up inspections because thermal images can show where temperature patterns have changed while moisture readings provide a more direct comparison.
The MR176 stores thermal images with measurement information overlaid and can hold up to 9,999 images. Images and readings can be transferred for documentation and reporting through FLIR software.
