Tramex CMEX5 Overview

The Tramex Concrete Moisture Encounter X5, or CMEX5, is a professional digital moisture meter developed specifically for concrete floors, slabs and cementitious screeds. It provides fast, non-destructive quantitative moisture-content readings from the upper portion of a concrete slab while also incorporating environmental measurements that are useful during flooring installation, concrete coating and restoration work.

Unlike a basic comparative scanner, the CMEX5 includes a dedicated concrete moisture-content scale and multiple concrete and screed reference scales. It is designed for professionals who need to take many readings across a floor and document how moisture conditions vary from one area to another.

Non-Destructive Concrete Moisture Measurement

The CMEX5 uses electrical impedance to measure moisture in concrete without drilling a hole for every test point. Tramex specifies a penetration depth of approximately 20 mm, or 3/4 inch, into the slab.

The concrete moisture-content scale ranges from 0% to 6.9%. The meter also includes Carbide Method equivalent scales for concrete and anhydrite/gypsum screeds, a gypsum reference scale and a 0–100 comparative reference scale.

Useful for Flooring Installation and Concrete Coatings

Concrete moisture can affect adhesives, coatings and moisture-sensitive floor coverings. The CMEX5 allows installers to take a large number of readings across the slab before installation, helping identify areas that differ from the overall moisture pattern.

For comparative testing, the meter is designed for use in workflows associated with ASTM F2659. It can help determine where additional investigation should be concentrated before a floor covering or coating system is installed.

Built-In Hygrometer and Dew Point Information

The CMEX5 includes a built-in hygrometer that measures ambient relative humidity, temperature, dew-point temperature and humidity ratio. These environmental measurements are especially useful when floor installation or coating decisions depend on the relationship between slab conditions and the surrounding air.

Monitoring dew point can also help identify conditions where condensation may occur on a concrete surface, which can be important before applying coatings or other moisture-sensitive systems.

Bluetooth Moisture Mapping and Reports

Bluetooth connectivity allows the CMEX5 to work with the Tramex Meters app. Readings can be organized into moisture maps, reports and charts, while geotagging, photos and timestamps help document where measurements were taken.

On larger commercial floors, that documentation can be as valuable as the individual reading. A moisture map makes it easier to identify trends across the slab and to compare results when the area is tested again later.

Optional RH and Pin Probe Expansion

The CMEX5 can be expanded with optional Hygro-i2 probes for in-situ relative-humidity testing, including ASTM F2170 workflows. Optional pin probes can also extend the instrument to wood, drywall and WME measurements.

An optional Tramex Concrete Moisture Probe can provide in-situ moisture-content measurements deeper within the slab. These accessories make the CMEX5 a flexible platform, although they should not be confused with functions included in the basic meter itself.

When to Use the CMEX5

The CMEX5 is a strong fit for professional flooring installation, concrete coating, inspection and water-damage work where fast non-destructive measurements and documentation are required. It is particularly useful for screening and mapping a slab before deciding whether additional project-specified testing is necessary.

As with any concrete moisture assessment, the installation specification and flooring or coating manufacturer requirements should determine which test method is ultimately required for acceptance. The CMEX5 is best viewed as a professional, high-speed concrete moisture tool that can also integrate into a broader testing program.
